About PetAgeCalculator
A free, science-based tool for dog owners who want real answers - not a rough guess multiplied by 7.
What is PetAgeCalculator?
PetAgeCalculator.net is a free tool that converts your dog's age into the equivalent human age - accurately. It was built by dog lovers who got tired of the oversimplified "multiply by 7" rule that has been passed around for decades despite being scientifically inaccurate.
The calculator is used by dog owners, veterinary students, and curious pet enthusiasts who want to understand their dog's life stage more precisely. It accounts for the two factors that matter most: the non-linear nature of dog aging and the significant impact of breed size on lifespan.
The science we use
Our calculations are based on the landmark 2020 study by Wang et al. published in Cell Systems, which used DNA methylation patterns - the same "epigenetic clock" used in human aging research - to establish a biologically accurate mapping between dog years and human years.
Key findings that inform our calculator:
- Year one is dramatic. A 1-year-old dog is biologically equivalent to roughly a 30-year-old human. Dogs reach full physical and sexual maturity within 12 months - a process that takes humans nearly two decades.
- Aging follows a logarithmic curve. After the rapid first year, the rate of aging slows considerably. A 7-year-old dog is closer to a 62-year-old human, not a 49-year-old as the multiply-by-7 rule suggests.
- Breed size profoundly affects lifespan. Small breeds (under 20 lbs) typically live 12–16 years. Giant breeds (over 90 lbs) typically live just 8–10 years. Our calculator adjusts for your dog's size category accordingly.

Our weekly dog care articles
Beyond the calculator, we publish a new dog care article every week covering health, nutrition, training, behaviour, and seasonal care. Topics are researched using current veterinary literature and reputable sources including the American Kennel Club, peer-reviewed journals, and leading veterinary institutions.
Our goal is to make evidence-based dog care information accessible to every dog owner - not just those with veterinary training.
Who built this?
PetAgeCalculator was built by a small team of dog owners and developers. We are not a veterinary practice and this tool does not constitute veterinary advice. For health concerns about your dog, always consult a licensed veterinarian.
We believe that informed dog owners make better decisions for their pets. That's the entire reason this site exists.
We also have a cat age calculator
Dog aging isn't the only thing we cover. Our cat age calculator applies the same research-based approach to feline aging, accounting for the distinct stages of cat development.
